![]() ![]() ![]() Through its wonderful usage of purples, deep reds and blacks it manages to convey a feeling of desperation and perfectly visualist the ever-present slow descent into madness. The game opts for a a cosmic horror appearance that seems to be derived from Lovecraft and Poe works of old, be it the character design which sports characters with plague masks and hoods or the weapon design, players use scythes and great-swords larger than the average man, Darkest Dungeon’s appearance is fully entrenched in horror and all things DARK. Upon first glance, is is incredibly easy to tell that Darkest Dungeon is not your average side-scrolling RPG. Aesthetics – It’s gorgeous, in an exceptionally grotesque way… So where do we get started with a game like Darkest Dungeon? 1. Like a difficulty spike that skyrockets after the first few battles? Like the idea of your party members going insane and being permanently de-buffed or even killed due to their stress levels? Like Dark Souls but always felt it was a little too easy on the horror side? Oh boy, is this the game for you! ![]() Needless to say, it is a unique experience which you will nary get anywhere else. The game sports a beautifully dismal Lovecraftian aesthetic and surrounds the player with a wonderful selection of Dark Souls-esque music provided by composer Stuart Chatwood all while battling ghouls and monsters through a – seemingly – unending landscape. ![]() It follows the adventures and misadventures of a rag-tag band of characters who make their way through an inherited estate’s undercrofts and catacombs, eliminating threats and making the place a more safe and inhabitable place in order to fulfil the ambitions of the main character who inherited the estate initially. Red Hook Studios’ Darkest Dungeon is a turn-based rogue-like with elements rarely ever seen before in video games. ![]()
